History
The Golden Retriever originated in Scotland during the late nineteenth century and is a mix
of the Tweed water spaniel, which is now extinct, and the Wavy-CoatedRetriever. The British
Kennel Club accepted the first golden, or yellow retriever in 1920 as "retriever" (golden). The
first golden retrievers were imported to the US in-the late eighteen hundreds. The
AKC registered its first golden in1925. I would very much like to give just a sample of the
differences in American bred per American standards vs. European bred by UK standard.
This is not because of a coat color difference but because of the difference in the basic
structure. A good breeder always follows standards set by his parent club or kennel club.
It is an official written description of the ideal specimen of that breed. The European Golden
is bred per UK standards giving the European Golden a different appearance than an
American standards bred Golden. Bigger boned, with a broader head and muzzle, and a
strong muscular neck and straight level to line. Males are 22-24 inches at the withers and
females 20-22 inches. There is no weight restriction for the UK standards. This type of
Golden can be cream to golden in color with a dark pigment to the nose and eyes.
Retrievers of the 19th century were lighter in color than the UK standards first permitted but
is now allowed. A Golden bred by American standards is less stocky with a smaller head. In
both standards there is no clear indication how big the head must be in comparison to the
rest of the body. This has made a difference in the size head being shown on the American
Golden compared to the European Golden. This is more visible for males then females
resulting in a different expression, a slight rear angulation rather than a level top
line as is UK standard. Both AKC and UK have the same height standards, the UK has no
restriction on weight. The male height should be 22-24 inches at the withers, and females
should be 20-22 inches at the withers. For AKC standards the males weigh 65-75lbs and the
females weigh 55-65lbs, anything more or less would be disqualified in the show ring. The
coat is dense and water repellent, with various shades of lustrous gold. These are a few more
good articles to give you the right idea why there is a difference in the American Golden and
European. The temperament of the Golden Retriever is their crowning glory. "kind, friendly
and confident" Goldens are well known for their intelligence, workability, patience and
eagerness to please. Along with their ability to focus on at task makes them excel at agility,
obedience, conformation and their love of water, retrieving and endless patience in a hunt
test. They make wonderful rehab dogs because of their friendly nature, eagerness
to please and great ability to focus and train. They are compatible withchildren and adults
and are good with other dogs, cats and most livestock.Golden Retrievers are particularly
valued for their high level of sociability towards people, calmness, and willingness to learn.
Because of this, they are commonly used as guide dogs, mobility assistance dogs, and search
and rescue dogs They are excellent with children and this along with their other qualities
has made them a favorite family pet. As with any dog, children should always be supervised
when playing together. Any dog needs to be kept busy and a good way to do this is taking
them to puppy classes and obedience training. Our dogs did not come fully trained nor with
a manual. Our love for our dogs did not make them well trained but diligence and
a knowledge of what is best for our dogs. Please read a book, join your local club, and take
your pet for training. You will be very happy you
did.
